Eucalyptus Hills rises north and west of downtown Lakeside, a semi-rural stretch of San Diego County's East County where narrow roads curve over rolling ground and Highway 67 passes through on its way to Mapleview Street. Eucalyptus groves and chaparral cover the slopes, and canyons drop away between the hilltops. Lots here commonly run from one to five acres, so homes sit back at the end of long driveways. Midcentury ranch houses with pens and pasture mix with 1970s Spanish-style houses, custom homes with outbuildings and pools, two-story places perched for the view, and a few small mobile home communities. Street names like Bridle Path Lane and Crazy Horse Drive fit the setting. Horses shape the outdoors. Riders use the quiet roads, upward of six boarding stables and riding schools operate nearby, and in December 2023 the county opened the Dianne Jacob Lakeside Equestrian Park where Moreno Avenue meets Willow Road, with arenas and room for shows. On foot, the San Diego River trail off Channel Road and Cactus County Park, with its BMX track, ball fields and a one-mile trail, sit just past the neighborhood's edge in Lakeside. Eating out means a short trip downhill. Cafe 67, at the light where the freeway meets Mapleview Street, serves made-from-scratch breakfasts in big portions surrounded by movie decor. The Grill at Willowbrook is the clubhouse kitchen at the public Willowbrook course, a flat layout shaded by trees that has followed the river since 1955. Mary's Donuts and Coffee on Maine Avenue sells its creatively named deli sandwiches alongside the donuts. Nothing in the neighborhood runs on a bus line, so every errand is a drive. The closest supermarkets are along Woodside Avenue and Winter Gardens Boulevard, and Santee and El Cajon cover the big-box runs. Acreage brings its own chores, too, since fences, brush clearing and long private driveways all need keeping up. Evenings in Eucalyptus Hills are quiet enough to hear hooves on the pavement, with the valley lights coming on below and El Cajon Mountain going dark to the northeast.
