Downtown Fallbrook is a few blocks of Main Avenue where you can still park out front, run into the library and pick up a pastry on the way home. Fallbrook covers a wide spread of hills in northern San Diego County, and the farther you drive from that small center, the bigger the lots and the thicker the avocado trees. Close to Main Avenue the streets hold older single-story houses on modest lots. Out on the hillsides, ranch houses sit on parcels planted with groves, and long driveways climb past rows of trees to homes you barely see from the road. Two preserves anchor the outdoors. Los Jilgueros Preserve, off South Mission Road, loops past ponds, a freshwater marsh and open grass, and it is an easy place to walk a dog before work. Up on the north side, the Santa Margarita River Trail Preserve follows a wild stretch of river that still runs without a dam, shaded by oaks and sycamores, with beaver ponds and miles of trail shared by hikers, riders and bikes. Live Oak County Park on Reche Road keeps a grove of old oaks on the site of a former Luiseño village. Kettle On Main opened in 2025 at 139 South Main Avenue and is where downtown gets its morning coffee and breakfast. A short way down the street, The Coal Bunker cooks scratch-made American plates with no seed oils and keeps a long list of local craft beer. 127 West Social House, on West Elder Street, serves shared plates on two patios by the creek and gets packed for live music nights. Errands in Fallbrook are simple by rural standards. The Fallbrook Branch Library is on South Mission Road, and the big supermarkets sit farther down the same road. Most trips mean driving, though NCTD's Breeze 306 bus does run through town. Highway 76 and Interstate 15 are east of the center, and Camp Pendleton fills the hills to the west. Getting out takes patience. The interstate is a real drive from most homes, and the roads that reach it are mostly two lanes. What you get back is a downtown where people still recognize each other at the coffee counter, and trees in nearly every view.
