Freedom is the Watsonville edge community along Freedom Boulevard, and it blends into the city so smoothly that the boundary is mostly a matter of signs. The name was a rebrand, since the crossroads was known as Whiskey Hill until a vote in 1877 gave it something loftier. Streets here are mostly single-family houses laid out in the same compact pattern as Watsonville's edges. Farmland and orchard country begin just beyond them. Parks are the thin spot in Freedom. Carey Davis Park is the closest green space, a little under a third of a mile from the boundary. The Watsonville Wetlands are under a mile away, with their sloughs and trails, and the same road that brings visitors to the Corralitos wineries continues up the hill for a longer outing. Freedom Meat Lockers, at 160 Hi Grade Lane, is the anchor business. The family butcher shop has been open since 1970, makes about thirty kinds of sausage in house, and the Bavarian cheese sausage gets the most mentions. Corralitos Brewing Company is next door in neighborhood terms, with fruited beers, outdoor seating and rotating food pop-ups. For mornings, Hidden Fortress Coffee Roasting and Freedom Bakery are about three quarters of a mile off, on the Watsonville side. A Safeway and Vallarta Supermarkets are both within about a third of a mile, so groceries are quick, and a trip to the coast by Highway 1 is easy. Most other errands are a short drive, and Highway 1 is the way to the coast. The tradeoff is the missing park. Freedom has plenty of shops and sausage, but for a ball field or a trail you leave the boundary. A butcher counter and a taproom are the two places that act as gathering spots here, and both are easy to find along the same stretch of road.
