Great Oaks Park, San Jose, CA

In San Jose, Great Oaks Park is a neighborhood that lives up to its name in the most literal way: the streets wrap around the park they are named for, and it is a good one, with a skate park, ball fields, basketball courts and a pair of playgrounds packed into more than a dozen acres. For a flatland tract in this part of the city, that kind of recreation right in the middle of the neighborhood is a genuine asset, and the Coyote Creek greenbelt and trail add more open space just to the east. The homes are long-standing single-family homes on level valley land, most of them only a handful of blocks from the park. Yards are regular suburban size, and the blocks have the settled look of a tract that has been lived in for decades. The paved Coyote Creek Trail follows the water north to Hellyer County Park and its velodrome and south toward Anderson Lake, flat enough for an easy ride in either direction. Coffee and most meals are a short drive south around Village Oaks. Pour Decisions, on Village Oaks Drive, does espresso and breakfast early, then switches to craft beer in the evening. Emperor of India on Cottle Road cooks Indian curries, and Bill's Cafe, also on Cottle, is where a lot of weekend breakfasts happen. Closer in on Monterey Road, Holder's Country Inn handles burgers and breakfast plates. Daily life runs by car here, as it does across most of this corner of the city. Groceries and errands happen out on the big roads like Blossom Hill and Cottle, US-101 is a quick hop north toward downtown or south down the valley, and rail is out of walking range. The tradeoffs are the ones this part of south San Jose shares: it is boxed between US-101, the creek and the Great Oaks business park, so freeway proximity is part of the deal, and there is no rail nearby. Still, for a modestly priced neighborhood organized around a genuinely useful park, Great Oaks Park delivers the thing that matters most, and it is easy to underrate from the map.
