Hamilton Place, San Jose, CA

Hamilton Place is a transit-oriented pocket of west-central San Jose whose standout feature is the Fruitdale light-rail station sitting right in it, along the Southwest Expressway corridor. That gives the neighborhood genuine rail access to downtown and the West Side, a real advantage over the car-only tracts around it. The name can mislead, since the Green Line's Hamilton stop is over in Campbell. From Fruitdale, trains run one way toward downtown and Diridon Station and the other way through Campbell to Winchester. VTA bus 25 and Express 103 connect at the station, which also serves San Jose City College and Santa Clara Valley Medical Center nearby. Homes in Hamilton Place mix single-family houses with apartments and other multifamily buildings, and the apartments grow more common toward the Bascom Avenue corridor on the west side. The station sits close enough that a lot of homes here are a walk from the platform. Food and shopping lean south toward Campbell. The Pruneyard, at Bascom and Campbell avenues, is the big draw, with shops, restaurants and Pruneyard Cinemas, where cocktails come to your seat and the Cedar Room restaurant shares the building. STARDUST Coffee House, a little north of it on South Bascom, works Asian-fusion flavors into its coffee and brunch. Over on Meridian Avenue, Cafe San Jose is the weekend breakfast stop, with meatless plates next to the hearty ones. For time outside, Bascom station, one stop past Fruitdale, sits about a block from a Los Gatos Creek Trail trailhead, the easiest way onto the creek path for a long walk or ride. Highway 17 is a short drive west past the Pruneyard, and the Pruneyard itself is close enough that a movie and dinner make an easy weeknight outing. But for a commuter who wants to live a short walk from light rail at a reasonable price, Hamilton Place delivers exactly that. It is a practical, transit-first neighborhood rather than a scenic one.
