Harbison Canyon is a narrow, oak-shaded hollow in San Diego County's East County, wedged between the Crest ridge and Alpine, with El Cajon on the mailing address. It takes its name from John S. Harbison, a beekeeper who homesteaded here in the 1870s and whose hives helped put the county at the top of the state's honey trade. Old Ironsides County Park on Harbison Canyon Road is the canyon's common ground. It's a small grove of shade trees with a playground, a basketball court, picnic tables and a meeting hall. For longer walks, the Crestridge Ecological Reserve, reached off Horsemill Road, spreads over 2,800 acres of oak woodland, creekside growth and sage scrub laced with trails, and dogs can come along. Homes line the canyon floor and climb the hillsides on side roads such as Frances Drive, which pitches steeply toward Crest. The 2003 Cedar Fire destroyed about 370 of the roughly 420 homes here, and rebuilding stretched on for years, so many houses date from the mid-2000s, set among older survivors and big oaks that came through. Food on the canyon floor is limited, so most meals mean a short drive. Down toward Dehesa Road, Sycuan Market is a 24-hour stop with a big fuel island and a Boar's Head deli that makes sandwiches to order. Up the other way, off Olde Highway 80 in Flinn Springs, The Train Station is a little cafe set inside an old caboose. Everyday shopping happens in El Cajon or Alpine, and Interstate 8 is the way to both. There's no transit to speak of, so each household plans around its cars, and county Fire Station 24 covers the canyon. The canyon's shape cuts both ways. The same steep sides that make it feel removed from the suburbs also leave it with winding, narrow ways in and out, and a trip for groceries is never quick. Late in the afternoon, when the sun drops behind the ridge and the oaks throw the whole canyon floor into shade, it's easy to see why people rebuilt here instead of leaving.
