Hartnell Park is the college-side neighborhood just west of downtown Salinas, organized around Hartnell College, which has stood on Central Avenue since 1936, and the small neighborhood park that shares the name. Weekday life follows the class schedule, with students and staff moving between the library, the coffee counters and the bus stops. Houses around Hartnell Park are older single-family homes on city blocks, with the Victorians beside the Steinbeck House and the Tudors and Craftsman bungalows of Maple Park both close by. Hartnell College Library and the Monterey County Law Library are both inside the neighborhood. The Western Stage, the college's professional theater company, is based on campus and stages Steinbeck adaptations, so evenings are not entirely quiet. The park itself is a playground and basketball spot at 723 West Acacia Street. For a bigger lawn, Central Park lies just east along Central Avenue, with a rose garden, tennis courts and shaded paths. City parks here operate from dawn to dusk. Villa Rivera Café, a locally owned coffee shop at 142 West Alisal Street, is where many students and downtown workers start the day. Brewjee Coffee's Alisal Street shop pours coffee along with beer and wine a block toward Main. For lunch, Taqueria 3 Hermanos on West Market Street makes gorditas and caldos, and the Steinbeck House serves lunch Tuesday through Saturday at the campus edge. Downtown's Saturday farmers market, the Amtrak platform and the downtown bus stops all sit close, which suits people without a car. The neighborhood has cafes and pizza counters but no grocery store, so shopping trips head south along Main toward Lucky and Nob Hill Foods. The area keeps a student rhythm, busy on class days and quieter when the semester ends, and the Steinbeck House block adds a lunchtime crowd from out of town.
