Mission Park covers the stretch of Salinas where downtown eases into older residential blocks around Lincoln Avenue and South Main Street. People tend to know it by its landmarks, and the biggest is the John Steinbeck Library at 350 Lincoln Avenue, where Steinbeck and Salinas history shelves sit beside a hangout space for teens and a lab for digital media. More than 100,000 books, discs and periodicals circulate through it, and the building has free WiFi and computers anyone can use. Mission Park homes are mostly single-family, with 1920s and 1930s houses nearer downtown and mid-century ranches on the outer streets, the same range found across South Salinas. Maple Park, with its Tudors and bungalows, borders it to the south. Woodside Park is the neighborhood's own green space, and the Saturday market stalls fill Main Street on the downtown end. Larger lawns and courts are at Central Park, a few minutes by car, and the Steinbeck Center and Oldtown's shops are an easy ride north along Main. Cherrybean Gourmet Coffeehouse & Roastery at 332 Main Street is the roaster locals point to, with pastries and lunch plates beside the coffee. Mama Lupita's serves Mexican plates, and Elli's Great American Restaurant at 1250 South Main opens at 7 for big breakfasts and diner classics. Lucky supermarket, on South Main, handles the weekly shop, and bus lines pass through the area. Highway 101 is close for trips toward Monterey or San Jose, and the Amtrak station is a short ride north. Streets are somewhat walkable and bikeable, which suits quick trips to the library or the roaster. The library keeps short hours, open Monday through Friday and closed on weekends, so Saturday browsing is not an option here. Even so, a block like Lincoln Avenue, with a big rock outside the library and a roaster up the street, feels like a place with its own habits.
