Hellyer Christopher, San Jose, CA

Hellyer Christopher is a flat tract neighborhood west of US-101 along Hellyer Avenue, and it lives right next to one of south San Jose's best recreation assets. Just across the freeway sits Hellyer County Park, home to the region's Olympic-size velodrome, the fishing waters of Cottonwood Lake, disc golf and a long stretch of the Coyote Creek Parkway trail. The houses are established single-family places on regular lots, and many streets dead-end at the freeway wall. Christopher Elementary sits inside the neighborhood's borders. Hellyer Avenue is the main way in and out, and the creek's green corridor gives the eastern side some open space. Hellyer County Park is the outdoor centerpiece. It has an Olympic-size velodrome, Cottonwood Lake stocked for fishing year-round, a disc golf course and a big play structure with a seasonal splash pad. The county charges a vehicle fee, so plenty of people walk or bike in over the Hellyer Avenue crossing. From the park, the paved Coyote Creek Trail heads south toward Anderson Lake, a flat ride that follows the water the whole way. Food runs toward Senter Road, a short drive west. Banh Cuon Tay Ho makes steamed rice rolls filled with pork and mushroom or with shrimp, and Oc Lau Nuong, farther along the same road, is known for crawfish, crab and garlic noodles, with a dine-in happy hour. Lopez Taqueria on Senter covers the burrito run, and the whole strip makes an easy stop on the way home from errands. Groceries and errands happen mostly along Senter Road and Capitol Expressway. Transit is limited to VTA buses, so most trips from Hellyer Christopher start in the car, and US-101 is the quick way north or south. The honest tradeoff is the freeway: US-101 runs the eastern boundary and brings the noise that comes with it, and the park, for all its draw, sits across it. For buyers who want cycling, trails and a lake close by without paying a premium, this corner earns its spot.
