Neighborhood Reviews & Questions

Neighborhood Review

Homewood came before its ski hill, not after. Sacramento's Thomas McConnell platted the Homewood district in 1889, the post office opened in 1909, and the rope tows that became Homewood Mountain Resort only arrived decades later, taking the community's name rather than giving it. The mountain is the rare west-shore ski hill with the lake laid out below the runs, and the shoreline holds Obexer's, a marina and market the same family has run since 1911. There is real Gilded-Age glamour on this stretch: Henry Kaiser built the Fleur du Lac estate here in 1935, and it later stood in as the Corleone compound in The Godfather Part II. Housing is old-Tahoe cabins and mid-century homes along Highway 89 with a tight, high-value band of lakefront, and a small full-time population. The dominant local story is the resort's future. Its owners pursued a redevelopment and private-club conversion that drew a Keep Homewood Public backlash. The mountain sat closed for 2024-25 before commitments to reopen and stay public. Verify where that stands before you count on lift access. Add the narrow two-lane highway, heavy snow, and wildfire, and you have a beautiful, in-flux corner of the shore.
