Island Chaffee is not a residential neighborhood but one of the four artificial oil islands that sit offshore in San Pedro Bay, visible from the Long Beach coast. Built in 1965 to tap the East Wilmington Oil Field, the islands were given a unique disguise: landscaped berms, palm trees, colorful facades, and sound walls that hide the working oil rigs behind what looks, from a distance, like a resort or a cluster of condo towers. Each island honors an American astronaut who died in service, and Chaffee carries the name of Roger B. Chaffee, one of the three Apollo 1 crew members lost in 1967. There is no public access and no housing; the island is an active oil-and-water-injection facility operated under city and state oversight. Its value to residents is purely scenic, an unusual and oddly beautiful sight on the horizon, especially when the islands are lit at night.
