Island Grissom is one of Long Beach's four offshore oil islands, not a neighborhood but a disguised industrial site in San Pedro Bay. Built in 1965 over the East Wilmington Oil Field, the islands hide their pumps and rigs behind landscaped mounds, sculpted concrete towers, and palm plantings, a deliberate effort to make heavy industry look like seaside architecture. Grissom takes its name from Virgil "Gus" Grissom, one of the Apollo 1 astronauts who died in 1967. The island has no public access and no homes; it is an active oil-and-water-injection facility. For residents, it is a piece of the famous Long Beach skyline-on-the-water rather than a place anyone lives, best appreciated from the beach or a harbor cruise. It is one of the more unusual sights in the city, and a tangible link to the oil boom that shaped Long Beach.
