King City runs along the Salinas River in the southern Salinas Valley, and its center is Broadway, a few blocks of storefronts where restaurants, a cafe and old bank buildings sit side by side. The Santa Lucia Range makes the western skyline, and the fields are never more than a few streets from anywhere in town. Housing is a mix of older single-story houses near downtown and newer subdivisions toward the edges, on straight blocks with modest lots. The town is compact enough that most of it can be crossed on foot. Downtown itself is changing, with a new plaza, streetscape work and a trial of reverse diagonal parking along the main street, according to the local paper. Broadway has the places people actually eat. The Cork and Plough, at number 200, is the sit-down American spot with a bar, and El Lugarcito, at 128, serves Mexican plates. Guadalajara Restaurant is at 211, and Castro's Bakery and Deli handles bread and sandwiches. For coffee, Hestia Cafe at 320B is open Saturday mornings and closed on Sunday, so plan around that. San Antonio Park on Bedford Avenue puts swings, slides and a little-kid play area beside the skate park, and Forden Park and Tognetti Field, home to Little League, round out the local green space. For longer walks and picnics, locals head out to the riverside park at the edge of town. Safeway and Grocery Outlet cover groceries, and Monterey-Salinas Transit buses and Amtrak Thruway coaches stop in town, though U.S. 101 does most of the work. Greenfield is the next town northwest. Distance is what King City trades for its pace. Salinas is about an hour up the highway, so specialists and big-box stores mean an hour on the highway. Within town, a week's errands fit inside a few minutes, and the Broadway blocks are small enough to cover before your coffee cools.
