East of Rancho Santa Fe Road, Carlsbad runs out of room, and La Costa Oaks covers that last stretch of hills and canyons before San Marcos and the Olivenhain side of Encinitas take over. It is the most inland piece of La Costa, quieter than the coast and built around open land as much as streets. Rancho La Costa sits across Rancho Santa Fe Road to the west. Open space frames almost every view. The Rancho La Costa Preserve wraps the hillsides, with an entrance off Corte Romero, and many homes look straight out over it. Stagecoach Park on Camino de los Coches is the neighborhood's main city park, set beside rolling grassland with canyon trails heading off nearby. Homes are mostly newer and larger, with plenty of five-bedroom houses on streets with Spanish names like Calle Palmito and Circulo Sequoia, plus custom hillside homes and a few apartment and condo communities near the park. Architecture stays consistent from block to block, as you'd expect in a master plan, and many associations run their own pools. La Costa Town Square, along Via Montebello and Via Mercato, is the neighborhood's commercial core. Ascend Coffee Roasters on Camino de los Coches roasts weekly and pulls espresso on a manual machine, and serves breakfast burritos and avocado toast from early morning. Dolce Aroma in Town Square fills its case with sfogliatelle, cannoli and bomboloni stuffed with custard or Nutella. Crust Pizzeria, a few doors from Ascend, handles pizza and pasta nights. Errands rarely leave the neighborhood. Sprouts and Pavilions both sit inside the boundary, along with the usual run of quick-service spots. Rancho Santa Fe Road runs north to San Marcos, and La Costa Avenue drops toward the coast, the freeway and the Encinitas restaurants. That drive west is the cost of all this space. The beach and the freeway are farther than from most of Carlsbad, and nearly every trip beyond Town Square starts in the car. From much of La Costa Oaks, the first thing in view out the front door is a ridgeline of the preserve.
