Lake San Marcos wraps around a long, narrow reservoir on the southwest side of San Marcos, an unincorporated stretch of San Diego County that the busy roads around it barely reveal. Turn off San Marcos Boulevard and the strip malls soon give way to docks, fairways and a lake you can't see from the main road. Housing is a mix of condos, townhouses and detached homes, much of it dating to the 1970s and 1980s and grouped along the shoreline and the fairways. A fair share of Lake San Marcos homes have yet to be remodeled, so a refreshed unit and an untouched one can sit side by side. Bigger gated houses climb the hills to the south. The water sets the rhythm. Swimming isn't allowed, but the Lake San Marcos Marina on La Bonita Drive rents kayaks and small electric Duffy boats, and a gondola company takes couples out for slow rides around the lake. The St. Mark Executive Course gives the community a short nine-hole layout for a quick round, and a path follows part of the shoreline for a morning walk. Amalfi Cucina Italiana sits beside the lake on La Bonita Drive with casual tables downstairs and a dressier Italian dining room upstairs. It took over the old Decoy space in 2020. The Lakehouse resort next door runs a poolside coffee counter that opens early, handy for a cup before heading out on the water. Groceries are close by on the edge of the community, with an Albertsons on West San Marcos Boulevard and an Aldi and a Vons along Rancho Santa Fe Road. The surrounding City of San Marcos provides public schools and fire protection, while a nonprofit community association looks after the place itself. Highway 78 runs to the north, and the Sprinter light rail stops at Palomar College, the nearest station. San Marcos Boulevard is a heavy commercial corridor, and its traffic and noise reach the homes on the northern edge. Down by the docks the boulevard feels farther away, and the day tends to end with the light going gold across the water.
