Las Lomas lies in northern Monterey County along County Route G12, the road that links Pajaro to Prunedale, with Elkhorn Slough just to the south. The community covers about a square mile of flat ground between Pajaro Valley farmland and the marsh, and Hall Road is its main lane. Homes are modest single-family houses spread along the lanes around Hall Road, with open farm ground between and around them. It reads as a rural settlement that grew up beside the fields it serves, and most of the building is low and plain. Water is the outdoor draw. Elkhorn Slough Reserve, at 1700 Elkhorn Road, has about five miles of trails, a visitor center and a native plant garden, and Kirby Park gives public access to the slough itself, with a boat ramp and free parking. Moro Cojo Slough has its own nature trails nearby. The slough is a birdwatching stop in every season, and a train sometimes passes along the edge of the marsh. The main place to eat and shop is Las Lomas Market at 182 Hall Road, a neighborhood grocery with a taqueria counter that stays open until evening. Reviewers mention the asada plates and the chicharron. Few other places in the community serve meals, so anything beyond a burrito or a bag of groceries means driving to Watsonville or Prunedale. Getting anywhere takes a car. County Route G12 is the through-route, and Watsonville to the north and Prunedale a little farther down the road are the two towns people drive to for everything else, whether that means a bigger grocery run or a sit-down dinner. With one market, one road and a slough all within a few miles, Las Lomas shrinks to an easy errand loop that ends at the water.
