Little Portugal, San Jose, CA

In San Jose, Little Portugal is a cultural corridor as much as a neighborhood, the historic heart of one of the largest Azorean Portuguese communities in the country. Portuguese immigrants, most from the Azores, settled the Santa Clara Valley from the mid-19th century, and their bakeries, markets, fraternal halls and radio built a genuine ethnic main street along the stretch of Alum Rock Avenue where East Santa Clara Street changes name. Five Wounds Portuguese National Church, just south of the strip, is the landmark everyone orients by. Its builders reused timber and ornament salvaged from the Portugal pavilion at San Francisco's 1915 world's fair, and its stained glass draws a steady stream of painters and photographers. Locals stop at Popular Bakery on Alum Rock Avenue for queijadas, small Portuguese tarts, in custard, orange and bean. A few doors away, Adega serves Portuguese cooking alongside a long list of Portuguese wines. For coffee, Window Cafe is farther east on Alum Rock, a compact counter with a weekday afternoon happy hour. Behind the avenue, the older single-family houses of Little Portugal sit on level lots along quieter side streets, close enough to downtown that the drive in is short and close enough to the avenue that the bakery is a walk for many of them. Watson Park, with an off-leash dog area at Jackson Avenue and 22nd Street, is nearby for a walk, and Mayfair begins to the east at King Road. Festa season still shapes the calendar here, with a crowned queen and a free shared meal of sopas, and KSQQ keeps Portuguese-language programming on the radio. Those traditions keep the neighborhood feeling Portuguese on an ordinary weekday as well as on festa weekends. The honest tradeoffs are that it is a busy, urban, lower-priced corridor rather than a leafy retreat, and the coming BART station has already put the area on displacement watchlists, so change is in the air. For buyers who want authentic character and a central East Side position, Little Portugal is genuinely one of a kind.
