Neighborhood Reviews & Questions

Neighborhood Review
Key Words: Master Planned, University Close, Ranch Homes

Los Altos South is the southern half of the Los Altos planned community, the post-war development that Lloyd Whaley laid out across the east side of Long Beach as one of the nation's early master-planned neighborhoods. Its streets carry the same DNA as the north side: tidy ranch homes and bungalows from the late 1940s through the 1960s, many remodeled, on flat lots with mature plantings. The location leans into the area's strengths, sitting close to Cal State Long Beach, the shops of the Los Altos Center, Stearns Champions Park, and the 405. It is a settled, residential, car-oriented neighborhood without a walkable retail strip of its own, relying on the nearby shopping centers for daily needs. The draw is consistency: well-kept mid-century homes, a central-eastside location near the university and major shopping, and the steady demand that has long defined the Los Altos name.
