Maple Park is a historic residential neighborhood on the south side of downtown Salinas, with streets of houses from the 1920s and 1930s. Tudor, Craftsman and Greek Revival styles stand side by side, and the builders clearly worked at not repeating each other. Mature trees shade the blocks, and the houses keep their original architectural detailing, on plans that range from compact cottages to big two-story homes. Mid-century ranches show up on the outer edges, and South Main Street forms the neighborhood's commercial spine. Hartnell Park has playgrounds and a basketball court, and Claremont Manor Park elsewhere in South Salinas has pickleball courts and youth baseball. Maple Playground is a small green space inside Maple Park itself, and Oldtown's Saturday farmers market sits up Main Street. The neighborhood lies between downtown and the farmland that begins to the west, so the edge of town is not far in that direction. Alvarado Street Brewery has its production and tasting room at 1315 Dayton Street, and the brewery's downtown taproom, in a 1929 bank on Main Street, sits in the neighborhood too. El Chilacatazo is a regular pick for Mexican plates, and Pupusería Marleny's serves Salvadoran pupusas. For coffee, Cherrybean Gourmet Coffeehouse & Roastery roasts at 332 Main Street. Salinas Valley Health Medical Center on Romie Lane stands between the freeway and these blocks, which keeps both the highway and the hospital close. Nob Hill Foods on South Main supplies the neighborhood groceries, Hartnell College is a short drive north, and city buses run along Main. Houses from the 1920s and 1930s reward a patient owner with their detail, and they ask more of that owner than a newer tract house would. Walk a few of these blocks on a weekday afternoon and the variety is the whole story, because no two rooflines repeat.
