Neighborhood Reviews & Questions

Neighborhood Review
Key Words: McKinley Elementary, Prusch Nearby, Coyote Creek

McKinley-Bonita is a quiet residential pocket of East San Jose that takes its name from its elementary school and one of its main streets. It sits between Coyote Creek on the west and King Road to the east, just south of the busy Santa Clara Street and Alum Rock corridors, which keeps its interior calmer than the arterials around it. The neighborhood elementary anchors the middle, and the sprawling Emma Prusch Farm Park, a working farm park with orchards and community gardens, is a short distance east for real green space. The housing is older, flat, single-family stock, modest and settled. The honest tradeoffs are the freeway and creek edges, the older housing, and a lower-priced, workaday character rather than a scenic one. But it is genuinely central, close to a standout regional park and to the East Side's cultural corridors, and it offers an affordable footing near downtown. For a buyer who wants a calm residential street in the middle of it all, McKinley-Bonita is an easy one to overlook and worth a look.
