Neighborhood Reviews & Questions

Neighborhood Review
Key Words: Historic Village, Quicksilver Park, Wooded Hills

New Almaden is the oldest story in the valley, and it still feels like it. This is the historic quicksilver mining village at the far south tip of Almaden, where Almaden Road narrows and climbs into the Capitancillos Hills past 19th-century buildings and the old mining museum in La Casa Grande. The thousands of acres of Almaden Quicksilver County Park sit right at the doorstep, so trail access here is close to unmatched anywhere in San Jose. What you give up for it is convenience. There is essentially no retail in the village, the drive out to a real grocery run is long, the road is narrow and slow, and the wildland setting makes fire season a genuine part of life. It is a small, wooded, history-soaked pocket for people who want trees and quiet more than sidewalks and shops. Nobody ends up in New Almaden by accident, and that is rather the point.
