Placer County governs from here, not from downtown Auburn: the DeWitt Center campus off Bell Road, a onetime 1940s military hospital complex, now houses much of the county government. Around it spreads North Auburn, an unincorporated stretch of Placer County foothills along Highway 49 north of Auburn, CA, where about thirteen thousand people live at roughly 1,300 feet among oaks and pines. Highway 49 is the spine and the sore point, a commercial strip anchored by centers like Rock Creek Plaza at Bell Road, with Sutter Auburn Faith Hospital just off it. Away from the strip, streets bend into foothill lots that run from suburban quarter acres to small acreage, some on wells and septic. Regional Park on Richardson Drive is the everyday outlet, with ballfields, pickleball courts, a pond loop, and an 18 hole disc golf course considered one of Northern California's best. The knocks are real: commute hour congestion on 49 between Bell Road and town, strip frontage that does the area no visual favors, and wildfire insurance math on wooded parcels. In exchange you get more house and land than Auburn proper, county services concentrated in your backyard, and the American River canyon trails a short drive east.
