North Wrigley is the upper half of the Wrigley district, the central-west Long Beach neighborhood named for chewing-gum magnate William Wrigley Jr., who helped develop it in the late 1920s. Pacific Avenue is the commercial spine, a working main street of markets, restaurants, and local businesses, and Willow Street forms the lively southern border. The housing is a mix of modest Spanish Revival and Period Revival homes and bungalows from the neighborhood's 1920s-and-1930s build-out, on flat, walkable streets, with a portion of the district recognized as a historic landmark area. It is an affordable, centrally located, close-knit part of the city, bordered on the west by the Los Angeles River and the 710. The honest tradeoffs are the freeway and river edges and the block-to-block variation in upkeep. The draw is solid older housing, a real main street, and a central position with active neighborhood pride.
