Wetland marks the top of the map here. Northwest Chula Vista covers the stretch of the city between the Sweetwater River and E Street, bounded by Interstate 5 on the west and Interstate 805 on the east, and its north edge runs along the marsh and State Route 54. The housing is mostly midcentury, with modest houses on a regular grid around Fourth Avenue and C Street, with apartment complexes clustered near Broadway and along Bonita Road. Much of it was built as wartime workers stayed on after the Rohr Aircraft plant arrived in 1941 and the city's population tripled within a decade. Eucalyptus Park on C Street is the city's first park, built in 1927 and covering nearly 20 acres, and it remains the main gathering spot for Northwest Chula Vista. West of the freeway, the Living Coast Discovery Center at Gunpowder Point keeps eagles, sea turtles, sharks and rays, and leads guided walks into the Sweetwater Marsh section of the San Diego Bay National Wildlife Refuge. Filippi's Pizza Grotto at 82 Broadway has been run by the founding family since 1950, serving hand-tossed pizza and red-sauce plates like linguine with clams. On Bonita Road, Randy's Donuts sells dozens of donut styles plus scoops from Sadie's, a Mexican ice cream maker, and the two meet in an ice cream sandwich made from a split donut. Coffee here mostly means chains, so many neighbors head a few blocks south of E Street to the cafes on Third Avenue. Everyday shopping is handled close by. Aldi and Smart and Final share a center on North Fourth Avenue, and Broadway adds a carniceria, seafood counters and taquerias. The E Street trolley station sits at the southwest edge of the neighborhood, Westfield Plaza Bonita is just north across State Route 54, and three freeways meet around the edges. Those freeways are also the downside. Traffic noise from I-5, I-805 and the 54 carries into the nearest blocks, and Broadway is a busy truck and bus route rather than a strolling street. The neighborhood's best feature is easy to miss from the freeway: a quiet grid of older homes with a protected bay marsh just past the western freeway.
