Norwood Cherrylee covers a busy stretch of east El Monte where Valley Boulevard, Durfee Avenue and Mountain View Road form a working grid of panaderias, seafood spots and corner markets, with the San Gabriel River a short way east. Mountain View Park anchors the middle of it. Single-family houses from the postwar decades line many blocks, apartment buildings fill in along the main roads, and manufactured home communities such as Brookside Country Club on Elliott Avenue add another option. The mix means a street of small houses can sit right beside a mobile home park. Mountain View Park on Elliott Avenue covers about ten acres, with a lighted softball field, a youth baseball diamond, a soccer field, basketball, two playgrounds and picnic areas with grills. The San Gabriel River bike path runs nearby along the river for longer rides, and it links south toward Whittier Narrows. Food here is mostly Mexican and mostly casual. La Michoacana Bakery on Mountain View Road handles pan dulce, Mariscos Puerto Vallarta a few doors down serves mariscos, and Birrieria Calvillo Aguascalientes on Valley Boulevard is a birria stop. For espresso, most people drive west to 7 Leaves Cafe on Garvey Avenue in Downtown El Monte. Everyday shopping runs through small markets like El Gallito Market on Valley Boulevard, with bigger grocery trips heading to Downtown El Monte or the chains along Garvey. The 10 Freeway is close for commuting, and El Monte station is a short drive west for the busway. Most errands are done by car. The tradeoff is that the neighborhood's commercial side is practical rather than pretty. The lighted softball field at Mountain View Park stays in use after dark, and on those nights it is the brightest spot in the neighborhood.
