Old East Davis is the historic strip just east of the railroad tracks, running from Second Street to a bit north of Fifth and over to L Street. It is one of the city's preserved older neighborhoods, with homes on the historic registry, landmark trees, and an active neighborhood association that has fought to keep its scale intact. The draw is walkability with character. You are a few blocks from downtown and the Amtrak depot, in a pocket of early Davis bungalows and cottages rather than tract houses. It has the texture that newer subdivisions simply cannot fake. The honest tradeoff sits right at the western edge: the train tracks. Freight and Amtrak run through, and the horns are part of the deal. For people who want history and downtown on foot, that is a fair price; for light sleepers, it is worth a test visit at night.
