Mace Ranch is the big East Davis subdivision that filled in the eastern edge of town starting in the 1980s, spread across the old Chiles and Mace ranch land between East Covell, Mace Boulevard, and Second Street. It is suburban Davis at its most planned: wide streets, a deep greenbelt and bike-path system, and homes from the 1990s and 2000s. The amenities are a real draw. Mace Ranch Park and John Barovetto Park anchor the open space, the Explorit Science Center occupies the old Mace Ranch House, and the Second Street Crossing center, with its Target, put everyday shopping inside the neighborhood. Korematsu Elementary and Harper Junior High serve the area. The honest note: it is car-friendly and a bit removed, four miles or so from downtown, so this is the trade of a quieter, newer house for a longer trip to G Street. The bike paths take some of the sting out of that.
