Old Torrance is the city's historic core and the one part of Torrance that feels designed as a town rather than a collection of postwar tracts. Tree-lined residential streets, early bungalows, civic buildings and a compact commercial district around Sartori Avenue still follow the plan Frederick Law Olmsted Jr. created in 1912. The result is walkable, varied and noticeably older than the rest of the city. Homes in the original grid include Craftsman bungalows and other pre-1930 houses, with individual properties gradually joining the city's historic register. The architecture is not preserved as one frozen district, so restored houses, additions and later infill appear together. That mix gives Old Torrance character without making it feel like an outdoor museum. Sartori Avenue and El Prado provide the social center. Torrance Bakery is a longtime local institution, and the Downtown Torrance Antique Street Faire brings more than 200 vendors to the street every fourth Sunday. Torrance High School adds a nationally recognized campus with Mediterranean Revival buildings and a 1930s Streamline Moderne auditorium. Parks and public life are close by. Torrance Park is the oldest park in the original townsite, while Charles H. Wilson Park offers sports facilities, a fitness loop and the twice-weekly Torrance Certified Farmers' Market. The Pacific Electric Railroad Bridge remains the neighborhood's most distinctive piece of early infrastructure and a symbol used by the police department. Olmsted placed homes near the industrial district so workers could walk to factories, and that relationship still shapes the area. Rail spurs, trucks and active industrial properties border residential streets, while Carson Street and Crenshaw Boulevard carry heavy traffic. Old Torrance fits residents who value architecture, community events and a recognizable downtown more than perfectly quiet surroundings. Its ethos is local and civic-minded. It has the strongest sense of place in Torrance, along with the noise and activity that come from living close to the city's working core.
