Olympic Valley is where America's ski culture grew up. Wayne Poulsen assembled the land, Alexander Cushing turned it into the Squaw Valley Ski Corporation in 1949, and in 1955 Cushing pulled off one of sport's great upsets by winning the 1960 Winter Olympics for a valley with almost nothing built in it. The place name has stuck since those Games. In 2021 the resort itself dropped the slur it had carried and became Palisades Tahoe, working with the Washoe Tribe on the change. Today the valley pairs a world-class mountain, an aerial tram, the country's only Funitel, and a pedestrian Village with valley-floor home enclaves and dense lodge condos. A Base-to-Base gondola, open since December 2022, links it to Alpine Meadows over the ridge. The hard truths are real and occasionally tragic. One road, Olympic Valley Road off Highway 89, feeds everything, so powder days and holidays gridlock and a wildfire evacuation would funnel the same way. This is serious avalanche country, an in-bounds slide killed a skier in January 2024, and the historic 1978 tram accident killed four. It is heavy snow, heavy rental use, and unmatched access to the lifts.
