Park Moderne is Calabasas' most eccentric neighborhood, a hillside collection of bird-named streets with roots in a 1920s artists' colony. The original community was designed around oak trees, narrow lanes and small modern cottages, and although most of those homes are gone, the street pattern and creative backstory still give the area a personality unlike the city's polished gated enclaves. Developer William Lingenbrink, architect Rudolph Schindler and homesteader Samuel Cooper Jr. laid out the colony between 1927 and 1931. Artists and writers bought inexpensive lots along Meadowlark, Blackbird, Bluebird and Hummingbird. Most original cottages were replaced by larger homes in the 1960s, but the surviving Anderson house, Bird Path and colorful Park Moderne Fountain preserve pieces of the experiment. The neighborhood today feels like an older, informal hillside community rather than a museum district. Houses vary in age and style, roads curve around mature oaks and the terrain gives individual streets a tucked-away quality. Calabasas High School sits within the area on the former site of an equestrian ranch. Wild Walnut Park adds a recently improved public space with separate dog areas, a playground, picnic grove and trail access. That gives residents a useful recreation destination without needing to enter a private club or gated community. Wildfire risk is the central tradeoff. The Woolsey Fire forced the entire city to evacuate in 2018, and the surrounding canyon roads offer limited routes out. The same oaks and slopes that create the neighborhood's atmosphere require serious attention to vegetation and emergency planning. Park Moderne fits residents who want history, mature trees and individuality more than architectural uniformity. Its ethos is quirky and creative. The artists' colony has mostly disappeared physically, but the bird streets and oak-bent lanes still carry its independent spirit.
