The Oaks, Calabasas, CA

The Oaks is the version of Calabasas built around privacy, scale and private recreation. Behind a staffed guard gate at the end of Parkway Calabasas, broad streets lead to large Mediterranean, Tuscan, Spanish and contemporary homes, many with pools, fountains and extensive entertaining spaces. It is the neighborhood most closely associated with Calabasas' luxury image. Most of the roughly 554 homes were built from the late 1990s through the mid-2000s. Floor plans begin around 3,500 square feet and extend well beyond 10,000, with five-bedroom layouts common. The Estates at the Oaks adds a smaller custom enclave behind a second gate, where individually designed properties occupy some of the community's most private lots. Recreation stays inside the gates. A 3.5-acre private center includes pools, tennis courts, sport courts, fitness facilities and event space, with landscaped pocket parks distributed through the neighborhood. There are no public schools, stores or civic facilities inside, and the lack of through traffic is both the selling point and the reason every outside errand requires a drive. The controlled entrance creates a quiet environment but also limits circulation. During an emergency, the same roads used for daily access must carry the entire community. The Woolsey Fire placed all of Calabasas under mandatory evacuation in 2018, and smaller wildfire evacuations remain part of hillside life. Las Virgenes Road provides a scenic route toward Malibu when conditions are clear, while shopping and schools are reached through the rest of Calabasas. The neighborhood is intentionally separate from that everyday activity. The Oaks fits residents who want a large home, extensive private amenities and a highly controlled setting. Its ethos is exclusive and inward-looking. Convenience means having recreation inside the community, while spontaneity and walkable errands are sacrificed for privacy and security.
