Pine Canyon is a foothill community just south of King City in Monterey County, where farm roads and open ground stand in for a street grid. The Santa Lucia foothills rise behind it, and the freeway is only a short hop away. Homes sit on parcels and along country lanes, with real room between neighbors and no sidewalks to speak of. The land lifts gently above the valley floor, which gives many properties a view across the fields toward the far side of the valley. No park or playground turned up inside the community. The nearest public green space is San Lorenzo Park, at the edge of King City beside the Salinas River, where a riverside walking trail and a farm museum draw people out, and the city has plans for more trail there. Closer to home, with ranch gates and open pasture in view, the foothills and farm roads are where residents head for a ride or a walk. For a taste of the area, the Delicato tasting room near King City pours daily and takes walk-ins for groups under six. Meals happen in King City, where Broadway is the closest thing to a main street. Tacos La Potranca de Jalisco is a favorite for cheap tacos, and Lawrence's Restaurant turns up on lists of the town's good breakfast stops. Groceries mean the Safeway there. A small private water company has long served this part of the valley, and U.S. 101 is the daily route, reaching Salinas in under an hour to the northwest and Paso Robles in about an hour to the southeast. Pine Canyon has no walkable center, so every errand depends on a car. You get space and a hill backdrop, and you give up the corner store. The nearest place to run out of milk is King City, and every trip gets planned around it. With no center of its own, the foothill line and the farm roads act as the landmarks.
