The Poly High neighborhood takes its name from Long Beach Polytechnic High School, the historic and nationally known campus at its center in the central part of the city. It is a dense, older neighborhood of bungalows, apartments, and small multi-unit buildings on a flat grid, bordered by Pacific Coast Highway and close to the Long Beach Memorial medical campus and the Martin Luther King Jr. Park area. The location is central and well connected, with downtown, the 710, and the central business corridors all close. Poly itself is a genuine landmark, known for its athletics and performing arts and for a long list of notable alumni, and it gives the neighborhood a clear identity. The honest picture is a working-class central neighborhood with older housing, higher density, and the upkeep and safety considerations common to the area. The draws are affordability, a central location, and the anchor of one of the most storied schools in the state.
