Questhaven/La Costa Meadows takes in the southwest edge of San Marcos, where the city runs up against Carlsbad's La Costa and the open hills toward Elfin Forest. It joins three very different pieces. The western streets of San Elijo Hills and that community's Town Square, a business park along La Costa Meadows Drive, and the semi-rural ranch land off Questhaven Road all fall inside this page. Homes depend on which piece you are in. Near San Elijo Road they are planned-community houses and townhomes built since the early 2000s, some high enough for an ocean view. Old Creek Ranch is another planned neighborhood on the western edge. Out along Questhaven Road, parcels open up into acreage, some of it still empty hillside. Just over the line in unincorporated county land, a 76-home project called Questhaven won county approval in 2024, with most of its acreage kept as open space. The Town Square is the social center. It has a lawn with a stage, a clock tower and a fountain, and the San Elijo Hills association stages its Concert in the Square series and an Oktoberfest there. Questhaven Park and Mahogany Park give nearby streets a place to play, and trail connections lead up toward Double Peak. Most of the dining sits on or around the square. The Sanctuary, a tasting room from The Lost Abbey, pours Belgian-style and barrel-aged ales in a moody, gothic-style room. Shane's Pizza and Pints is the casual pizza-and-beer stop on San Elijo Road South, and San Elijo Vine & Tap on Elfin Forest Road West is known for its weekend brunch and its rotating small-producer wine list. Errands start at the Albertsons on San Elijo Road, which handles groceries and a deli. Melrose Drive leads into Carlsbad for bigger shopping, and San Elijo Road or Rancho Santa Fe Road carries traffic north to Highway 78. A car is part of daily life here. San Elijo Road is the spine for much of the area, so a backup there leaves few ways around it. Questhaven/La Costa Meadows still offers a choice that most of San Marcos does not, between a planned street near a town square and a few acres of open land, all inside one neighborhood.
