Rancho del Rey was among the first planned communities east of Interstate 805 in Chula Vista, laid out from the late 1980s across about 1,600 acres of canyons and mesa tops. It came along at the same time as Eastlake and the first Otay Ranch plans, and its curving streets and stucco homes read as the older sibling of those communities. Most homes are two-story stucco houses with tile roofs, attached garages and small, usable backyards, built across the late 1980s and 1990s. The community holds roughly 4,000 homes across three planning areas, with a large commercial center along its edge. Rice Canyon is the local trail. The entrance on North Rancho del Rey Parkway leads to a wide, flat dirt path about a mile out and back, with a succulent garden at the trailhead. Voyager Park on East J Street has 11 acres of soccer fields, shelters and play equipment, and El Rancho del Rey Park adds another stretch of lawn. Southwestern College, founded in 1961, sits along the southern edge. Dining clusters along Otay Lakes Road. Ming's Revolving Sushi sends plates past on a conveyor belt and delivers extra orders by a small robot. Otay Mandarin is a local pick for salt-and-pepper wings, and Manna BBQ grills all-you-can-eat Korean barbecue at the table. Coffee here mostly means the chains in the same plazas. Errands stay within a few minutes by car. Ralphs anchors the Otay Lakes Road center, Costco sits on East H Street, and the Regal Rancho del Rey theater is just off Paseo del Rey. East H Street and Telegraph Canyon Road connect directly to I-805. A car is a requirement. Shops sit in plazas set back from the residential streets, and East H Street near Costco and the college backs up at rush hour. Rancho del Rey has had more than three decades for its trees to fill in, and that maturity is what separates it from the newer villages to the east, where the landscaping is still catching up.
