Roosevelt is a scattering of homes and open desert east of Lancaster, an unincorporated corner of Los Angeles County where the lots are big and town is a drive away. The community sits on the floor of the Antelope Valley roughly seven miles east of central Lancaster, near the even smaller settlement of Redman. The name lives on mostly through its school. Roosevelt School opened in 1908 in a tiny homestead house, and it later merged with nearby schools to form the Eastside Union School District, which still serves this side of the valley. Homes are spread across large desert parcels, mostly single-story ranch houses and manufactured homes set well back from the road, many with room for horses, RVs or a workshop. Plenty of the side roads are unpaved, and the land between houses is open scrub. The San Gabriel Mountains line the southern horizon on clear days, and wildflowers show up after wet winters. Rancho Sierra Golf Club on 60th Street East has a nine-hole course and a driving range, and the Antelope Valley California Poppy Reserve on the far side of Lancaster is the spring outing people plan around. Everything else means driving into Lancaster for groceries, restaurants and the shops along Lancaster Boulevard downtown, with Palmdale the next stop for bigger shopping. There is no practical way to live here without a car. The tradeoff is distance. Summer heat and spring wind hit hard out here, and a forgotten item at the store means a long round trip. What Roosevelt offers instead is dark, quiet nights and a view from most yards of desert running out to the mountains.
