Outside Avalon, Santa Catalina Island is less a conventional neighborhood than a vast protected landscape with one tiny village at its western end. The Catalina Island Conservancy manages most of the island, leaving canyons, ridges and coves open and wonderfully undeveloped. Two Harbors is the only true settlement beyond Avalon, squeezed onto an isthmus between Isthmus Cove and Catalina Harbor. Housing consists mainly of staff cottages, a few older homes, cabins and campgrounds, with Banning House Lodge overlooking the village. Private real estate is exceptionally scarce. Outdoor access defines life here. The 38.5-mile Trans-Catalina Trail crosses the island, and a broad network of hiking and biking routes reaches secluded beaches and high ridgelines. Two Harbors' recreation center makes kayaking, snorkeling and scuba diving part of an ordinary weekend. Village life centers on the pier. Harbor Reef Restaurant handles meals and drinks by the water, Harbor Sands hosts gatherings on the beach, and the General Store provides basic groceries and supplies. Farther inland, Airport in the Sky offers food to hikers, pilots and visitors at 1,602 feet. Logistics require advance planning. Catalina Express boats connect with San Pedro, a seasonal service links Two Harbors and Avalon, and most medical care, larger shopping and school needs involve Avalon or the mainland. After the last departure, choices narrow quickly—but so do the crowds. This is a fit for people who want the outdoors to be the entire point, not just a weekend amenity. Two Harbors trades convenience and housing choice for an extraordinary rhythm: hiking in open country by day and hearing mooring lines creak across both harbors at night.
