The Santa Rosa and Hicks area climbs into the Almaden hills along Hicks Road, a rural, high-end pocket of large custom estates and ranch properties on private acreage where oak canyons and chaparral replace the suburban grid. It is one of the most secluded residential settings in the city, with long driveways, dark skies, and the open space of the Santa Cruz foothills all around. Outdoor access defines it. The trailheads into Almaden Quicksilver County Park and the Sierra Azul open space are close, and Hicks Road itself is a legendary climb for weekend cyclists. Homes are spread far apart and impeccably kept, with natural, fire-safe landscaping taking precedence over manicured lawns. The tradeoffs are real: groceries, schools, and services are a long drive down toward Almaden Expressway, cell signal fades in the canyons, and the rural roads are narrow and unlit.
