Neighborhood Reviews & Questions

Neighborhood Review
Key Words: Capitol Caltrain, Highway Corridor, Modest Homes

The southern half of the Senter and Monterey corridor has one thing worth flagging up front: the Capitol Caltrain station sits inside it. Set your expectations, though, because Capitol runs only a handful of weekday trains, so it is more a bonus than a real commute anchor. Otherwise this is the same story as its northern twin, post-war tract homes set back from the Monterey Highway between two working arterials in the flat middle of south San Jose. The appeal is straightforward: it is affordable, central to the freeways, and close to the light rail across Highway 87 to the west. The honest side is the setting, with the Monterey Highway rail-and-industrial corridor running the western edge and a public realm that is functional rather than green. This is a value neighborhood, plain and simple, for people who want into San Jose without a leafy-street premium. If a peak-hour train and cheap freeway access line up with your life, it is worth a look, with clear eyes about the corridor.
