Silver Creek, San Jose, CA

In San Jose, Silver Creek is the foothill residential belt on the east side, strung along San Felipe Road where the valley floor climbs into the Diablo Range hills. It is part of the broader, well-heeled Silver Creek area, and it borders the gated Silver Creek Valley Country Club just to the south, which sets the tone for the neighborhood: newer hillside homes, a settled feel, and Evergreen schools like Silver Oak and Chaboya nearby. The elevation gives plenty of blocks a view back across the valley. It reads as a settled, finished place, with the newest streets pushed up against the slope and the older ones stepping down toward the valley floor. The hills climb right behind the houses, and much of that ridgeline is protected as the Silver Creek Open Space Preserve. A paved linear park follows the creek for long walks and easy bike rides, and Montgomery Hill, tied into the nature trails at Evergreen Valley College, adds a steeper climb with a view over the east valley. Coffee and a casual dinner mean a quick drive south to the shops on Silver Creek Valley Road. Con Azucar Cafe pours Mexican-style espresso drinks, including a horchata latte, with conchas and churros in the pastry case through the morning. The Creek Eatery in the same center bakes pizzas in a wood-fired oven and keeps a long list of local beers on tap. Heading north instead, Evergreen Village Square adds Evergreen Coffee Co, Ramen Osaka and a library branch around its town square. Errands take the car, even though those shops are only a short drive from most streets. Groceries and bigger shopping mean a drive down to the Aborn Road and Capitol Expressway corridors, and no light rail or train serves this edge of town, so reaching the rest of the valley starts with the drive to US-101. The honest tradeoffs are the car-dependence, since there is little walkable retail and errands mean a drive down to the Aborn and Capitol Expressway corridors, and the general remove from the rest of the city. But for buyers who want a newer foothill home in a calm, upper-tier east-side setting near a country club and good schools, Silver Creek delivers that combination, and it is one of the more comfortable addresses in the Evergreen foothills that stops short of full gating.
