Silver Leaf, San Jose, CA

Silver Leaf is a tidy early-1980s pocket of south San Jose built around its own small park, and it quietly has one thing much of this end of the city lacks: light rail you can actually reach. The VTA stations at Cottle and Santa Teresa are close, linking it to the whole valley without the expressway, and the Cottle Road shopping with its Target and Safeway handles the everyday runs. The housing is single-family tract stock on modest lots, and the flat blocks are easy to walk. Silver Leaf Park, at Palmwell and Silver Leaf Road, gives the middle of the tract a small green anchor, with other city parks and county open space a short drive away. Metcalf Park is the bigger outdoor draw. It sits on Coyote Creek with a playground and trailhead parking, and from there the paved Coyote Creek Trail runs flat in both directions, north toward Hellyer County Park and south past wetlands and a creek bridge toward Anderson Lake. Conservation groups describe this stretch of creek as a key wildlife link between the mountain ranges on either side of the valley. Bill's Cafe, the longtime San Jose breakfast chain, has a branch on Cottle as well, the usual call for a weekend breakfast. For coffee, Con Azucar Cafe sits a few minutes east on Silver Creek Valley Road, serving Mexican-style espresso drinks and pan dulce, and The Creek Eatery in the same center bakes wood-fired pizza for an easy dinner. Highways 85 and 101 pass close enough to bring freeway noise to the edges of the neighborhood, and downtown is a real trip rather than a quick hop. The light rail helps for trips north toward downtown, but most errands still start in the driveway. The catch is the setting, with Highways 85 and 101 both close enough to color the edges and downtown a real trip away. For value and transit access in the south valley, though, it holds up better than its low profile suggests.
