South Pomona Reviews & Questions

Neighborhood Review
Key Words: Rio Rancho Road, Corky's Bakery, Garey Avenue

South Pomona stretches below downtown from the Garey Avenue corridor out to the big shopping centers along Rio Rancho Road, and it is where much of the city does its weekly shopping. WinCo Foods, Food 4 Less and Cardenas Markets all fall within the neighborhood, which makes errands easy by car. The housing is mostly single-family homes, with older bungalows and postwar houses on the streets near Garey Avenue and newer tract homes and condos out toward Rio Rancho Road and the hills near Phillips Ranch. Apartment complexes line some of the arterials. For parks, Martin Luther King Jr. Park on West Lexington Avenue and Powers Park on West Olive Street are the green spaces on the older side, and Philadelphia Park sits on Philadelphia Street. On the western edge, Phillips Paw Park on Village Loop Road gives dog owners a fenced run near the hills. Food runs from local to chain. Taqueria De Anda on South Garey and Tacos Mexico a few blocks south handle quick Mexican food. Scott Drive In Dairy on Philadelphia Street is an old-style drive-through market, and Panaderia Don Cata on East Philadelphia bakes pan dulce. Getting around is a car-first routine. Garey Avenue is the main north-south route to downtown, and the 60 and 71 freeways sit at the southern and western edges. Get Air Trampoline Park on South Towne Avenue is a regular weekend stop. South Pomona lacks a walkable center. Most businesses sit in large parking-lot centers, and Garey Avenue is wide and busy. A weekday breakfast at Corky's, when the regulars are at the counter, shows the neighborhood at its most settled.
