Silver Leaf is a tidy early-1980s pocket of south San Jose built around its own small park, and it quietly has one thing much of this end of the city lacks: light rail you can actually reach. The VTA stations at Cottle and Santa Teresa are close, linking it to the whole valley without the expressway, and the Cottle Road shopping with its Target and Safeway handles the everyday runs. Inside, it is single-family tract homes on modest lots, flat and easy to walk, with Silver Leaf Park giving the middle of the neighborhood a green anchor and a handful of other parks and county open space nearby. It is not fancy and does not pretend to be; the appeal is a practical, well-located suburban address in the Oak Grove school area. The catch is the setting, with Highways 85 and 101 both close enough to color the edges and downtown a real trip away. For value and transit access in the south valley, though, it holds up better than its low profile suggests.
