Neighborhood Reviews & Questions

Neighborhood Review
Key Words: Freeway Circle, Northside Pocket, Boulevard Access

Starr King, which Houseberry also labels Freeway Circle, is a North Long Beach neighborhood named for the local elementary school and shaped by the freeways that frame it near the meeting of the 91 and 710 along Long Beach Boulevard. It is a modest residential pocket of postwar homes and apartments on flat streets, among the affordable parts of the Northside. The freeway proximity is the defining double edge: it brings noise and a hemmed-in feel on some blocks, but also some of the quickest regional access in the city, with downtown a short run down the 710 and the wider region close. Everyday shopping runs along Long Beach Boulevard and the nearby avenues. There is no park or retail center inside the boundary, so residents rely on the surrounding corridors and Northside parks. The appeal is an attainable home in a highly connected, if freeway-bounded, central-Northside location.
