The Villages is a world unto itself in the far eastern foothills: a 1,200-acre gated, age-restricted golf and country-club community built between 1967 and 2000 on former hillside vineyard and ranch land, and unlike anything else in San Jose. The community is restricted to residents 55 and older, so it is oriented entirely around that lifestyle rather than families. The honest tradeoffs are exactly that: it is gated, age-restricted, carries monthly dues, and is thoroughly car-dependent, with everyday shopping down the hill. But for buyers who fit its age profile and want golf, trails, pools and open space wrapped in a secure, beautifully kept foothill setting, The Villages offers a self-contained package no ordinary neighborhood can, and residents rarely feel a need to leave the gates.
