Twin Lakes/Oat Mountain is a canyon community where Chatsworth ends and the Santa Susana Mountains take over. Winding roads, brushy slopes and an unpolished rural feel make it seem much farther from the Valley than the map suggests. Homes sit on hillside lots of varied sizes along Mayan Drive, Browns Canyon Road and smaller side streets. There is no uniform tract pattern; cabins, modest houses and larger properties share the canyon, with open grassland and brush beginning just beyond the final driveways. Trails start close to home. Devil Canyon Trail drops from Mayan Drive, while Browns Creek Park offers a local patch of open space. Oat Mountain rises to 3,747 feet with antennas, weather equipment, old gas infrastructure and traces of a Cold War missile site on its slopes. Mountain lions are part of the ecosystem, not just an occasional headline. There are no stores, coffee shops or restaurants within the canyon. Daily errands lead down to Chatsworth, where residents also find the Metrolink station and most services. The 118 runs along the base of the hills and provides the main connection across the Valley. Wildfire is the defining risk. Dry grass, steep terrain and Santa Ana winds make brush clearance, insurance and evacuation planning essential. Narrow roads and distance from services add another layer to life in the upper canyon. Twin Lakes/Oat Mountain is for people who want nature at the back fence and accept the responsibility that comes with it. The reward is a rare feeling in Los Angeles: the street simply stops, the city drops away and the mountain becomes the neighborhood.
