Upper Sierra sits right up against the Berryessa foothills, and that edge-of-the-hills setting is what defines the neighborhood. It feels more open and less boxed-in than the flatter areas nearby, with some streets picking up views and a quieter overall atmosphere once you are inside. Homes here are mostly 1970s and 1980s builds, similar to nearby Piedmont Hills and Sierramont, but the terrain gives this pocket more variation, with streets that are not perfectly uniform and a mix of single- and two-story homes, many updated over time. The neighborhood has a well-kept feel overall, with mature landscaping and consistent upkeep. A big draw is the school cluster: Piedmont Hills High sits just outside the neighborhood and carries a lot of weight in this part of Berryessa, with nearby elementary and middle options making it a strong, school-driven area where people stay long-term. For outdoor space, this is one of the better spots in North San Jose, right next to the foothills with Penitencia Creek Park just outside to the southeast for trails and greenbelt. Daily convenience is solid along Berryessa and Piedmont roads, with the Berryessa BART station a short drive. Curb appeal is strong, and the hillside proximity adds character you do not get in flatter neighborhoods.
