Vienna Woods in Aptos sits right where the village meets the forest, and the Forest of Nisene Marks is the neighborhood's front yard. The state park lies four miles up Aptos Creek Road and offers around 30 miles of trail through redwoods that grew back after the loggers left in the 1920s. Leashed dogs are welcome on the fire road and a handful of designated trails. Vienna Woods streets are wooded, with homes among the trees and a few rows that climb toward the forest edge. Lot and house style change from block to block, so it pays to drive the area slowly and see the character street by street. Aptos Village County Park is the neighborhood's own green space, with a clubhouse, patio, gazebo and barbecue area. Soquel Drive runs along the lower edge, and most of what people need sits along it. Evenings are quiet, and the forest edge gives the neighborhood a different pace from the busier shopping strip to the west. For dinner, Persephone at 7945 Soquel Drive does seasonal fine dining and is where people book for an occasion. Companion Bakeshop is a short distance away for croissants and coffee before a hike. The Aptos History Museum at 7695 Soquel Drive, tells how the area went from logging camps and polo fields to what it is today. Daily errands are easy to loop together. Safeway and Cabrillo College sit just west, the village shops just east, and Highway 1 is a short drive away. Some streets let you walk to a coffee or a bakery, though the slopes mean a climb on the way back. Redwood shade keeps things cool and green, and it also keeps mornings damp, so roofs and gutters collect needles and moss. In return you get a trailhead close enough to decide on a whim, and the sound of the creek carrying down in the evening.
