Neighborhood Reviews & Questions

Neighborhood Review
Key Words: Solar Pioneer, Edible Landscaping, Car Free Paths

Village Homes is the most famous neighborhood in Davis and one of the best-known planned communities in the country, a 60-acre West Davis development the Corbetts started building in the 1970s around solar design, edible landscaping, and shared green space. Roughly 220 homes sit among community gardens, vineyards, orchards, and a network of bike and pedestrian paths that run behind largely fenceless backyards. Daily life here is genuinely different. Streets are narrow and shaded, the common areas grow food residents actually harvest, and the community center, pool, and playing field give the place a built-in social core. It drew Rosalynn Carter and Francois Mitterrand as visitors in its heyday and a Time magazine feature in 1999. The honest quirks are real: it was designed as a dark-sky community with few streetlights, so a flashlight on a night walk is part of the deal, and the strong HOA-and-community culture is a feature for some and a lot of process for others. You are buying into an ethos, not just a house.
