In San Jose, West Evergreen is the flatter, more urban front edge of the Evergreen area, sitting on the valley floor between the Capitol Expressway and the Aborn and Silver Creek corridors. Silver Creek High School sits inside it, and its biggest practical advantage is access: the Eastridge mall and the Eastridge Transit Center, one of the East Side's main bus hubs, are right at the northern edge, with a light-rail extension to Eastridge under construction that will make this one of the better-connected east-side pockets. Eastridge Center is the everyday reference point for this part of the East Side. It still holds department stores, an AMC theater and the Round 1 arcade, and the transit center beside it is a hub for Rapid 522 and many local VTA routes, with a light rail extension under construction. Groceries and weekly errands happen at Eastridge and along Tully Road, and Capitol Expressway leads west to US-101. Homes in West Evergreen are older single-family tracts on level ground, the valley-floor counterpart to the foothill neighborhoods farther east. Streets are regular and built around the car, with the commercial frontage kept out on the big roads and the interior blocks left to houses. Tacos El Pelon on Eastridge Loop is the local taco stop, and Nam Giao Kitchen and Lounge on Tully serves Vietnamese noodle dishes. TK Noodle and Pho Hoa sit a little farther west on Tully for a quick bowl of noodle soup. On East Capitol Expressway, BackAYard Caribbean Grill is known for jerk chicken and oxtail. East of the neighborhood, Lake Cunningham Regional Park circles its lake with a jogging path, picnic areas and a skate and BMX park. It is the nearest real open space, easy to reach for a walk after work or a weekend picnic. The honest tradeoffs are the busy Capitol Expressway and mall-driven traffic on the edges, and a workaday streetscape rather than a scenic one. But for buyers who want Evergreen-area schools with real shopping and transit close at hand, at a gentler price than the hills, West Evergreen is a practical, well-connected choice, and the coming light rail only strengthens the case.
